The Internet is very important to everyone as a method of communication. This is particularly when when you are away from home, loved ones, family and friends. And for those in business, it is so important to have e-mail and Internet as one of the tools of the trade.

The first thing to decide is how much are you going to use the Internet, is it just for the occasional e-mail, booking a flight to the UK or is it more than that.

It is at this point that you need to decide do you want dialup or Broadband (ADSL as it is called in France). Do you mind the slow dialup system, or do you need the speed of ADSL. If you want to know if you can have broadband or need advice, just phone French Liaison.

France Telecom has the monopoly in the rural areas in France which is where most people from the UK live. France Telecom's call rate is very expensive, even using some of the call packages they have on offer.

In France you are entitled to use an alternative company offering cheap calls, you then just pay your line rental to France Telecom. Some people are under the false impression, that they will get a degraded service as a result. This is no true as France Telecom have an obligation to maintain the phone lines, to reasonable standard.

There are many companies offering low price call packages, many are not much cheaper than France Telecom. UKtelecom offers one of the cheapest packages; we recommend you have a look at what they offer.

English TV is available in France via the ASTRA 2 Satellite. This is the same Satellite that provides the SKY channels. The ASTRA 2 Satellite also broadcasts all the " Free to Air" channels, which are open for anyone to receive.

All you need is either a SKY Digi box, no card is needed or a digital "Free to Air" box and of course a Satellite dish, aimed at the correct Satellite.
